Matchboxes have long held a fascination for collectors (and people in general), and there are many well-known superstitions about matches. During wartime there exists a superstition if three soldiers light their cigarettes on the same match, one will die. During Victorian times, it was believed if you inadvertently scatter a box of matches on the floor, it was a sign of luck. Breaking a match would “break” a run of bad luck.

Many people collect matchboxes (and matchbooks) for the fascinating cover art often featured - and these images also make the matchbox useful for magical purposes. A box with a picture of three dice might be useful for a gambling spell, or a box with an illustration of two lovebirds would be perfect for a reconciliation spell. Matchbox spells are intentionally simple, with few ingredients. Like much in spellwork, quantity does not necessarily equal quality!

Matchbox spells have existed probably as long as there has been matchboxes, but haven’t been as well publicized as say, mojo bags and spell jars.
